The Church wants to build bridges with those whose faith it used to be able to disregard – women, but particularly those on low incomes.
One way of doing that is by offering equal pay for equal work. Two dioceses, Bishop of Leicester and Birmingham, the Northamptonshire diocese and the Diocese of St Albans, have introduced similar measures already.
There are parallels with the early days of the NHS, when hard-won rights for patients were challenged by private firms – and not just because it is designed to treat everyone.
“Private health is now the preferred provider of services to the NHS,” says Dr Linda Ashworth, from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
For women, especially, it is good news that private firms are succeeding where the NHS has not, particularly in London.
“But the change has raised issues for women about equality of pay, for instance,” says Ashworth.
“Some women have put forward cases where they do not want to use private health, as they feel it is not given a fair go, for example, by being offered lower rates than men in the same job.”
But change takes time.
“Some women do feel patronised by private health providers who see them as a lower class than the men they take on,” says Ashworth.
The Church of England began last year by offering pastors and licensed lay workers equal pay for equivalent pastoral work. 0b46394aab
